Proofreading and Editing Services

Rates & Services

Basic Editing is the first level of copyediting.  Copyediting includes a line-by-line review of the manuscript for the following:

  • Typographical errors
  • Misspelled words
  • Grammatical errors
  • Punctuation
  • Incorrect usage (e.g., affect/effect)

Moderate Editing includes all services listed under Basic Editing, as well as a review of the manuscript for the following:

  • Sentence clarity
  • Word choice
  • Redundancies and/or inaccuracies in text (may include incorrect spelling of song or book titles, proper names, dates, or well-known facts. Extensive fact checking is not supplied.)
  • Maintenance of tone/voice  (may include a view of consistency of style and mood or presentation of content; consistency of point of view and tense; or the correct usage of words.)
  • Dialogue problems
  • Consistency/Standardization

              -   The sequence of chapter headings and subheadings lists, and tables

              -    References to illustrations, tables, and figures within the text

              -    Consistent style for em-dashes, ellipsis points, and serial commas

Extensive editing services are not provided as this time.

 Fiction preferred, but will edit some nonfiction.  No financial, technical, or pornography.

 All work is done electronically. I DO NOT edit hard copy.

 

Fees

Basic Editing                                                                                            $3.00 per double-spaced typed page

Moderate Editing                                                                                    $4.00 per double-space typed page

Typing author’s corrections/changes into typed manuscript    Rates depend on extent of corrections

Typing manuscript from handwritten copy                                     $4.00 per double-spaced finished page

(generally 2 handwritten pages = 1 typed page. I will only edit for punctuation, spelling and grammar as I type.)

Some clients with a work-in-progress prefer to send me a few chapters at a time. This way they can consider my suggestions as they write the following chapters. They write as they go – and pay as they go. 

 

Payment Arrangements

50% deposit required before job is begun. Balance due upon completion. Various methods of payment accepted.

Turn-Around Times

The time it takes to edit and return your manuscript varies due to:

  • The length of each segment you send
  • The number of changes/suggestions
  • The kind and complexity of changes or issues you ask me to address.

Generally, 30 pages can be edited and returned within a week of receipt, depending on my schedule.
